Why Kidscape ?

Kidscape, the award-winning charity known for its work in keeping children safe, was established in 1985 by child psychologist Michele Elliott. 

Kidscape developed the first nationwide programme for children that dealt with personal safety. A two-year study surveyed children of all ages about their concerns. The study revealed that the main threats to children came not from “stranger danger”, but from violence by family, friends and schoolmates, with bullying mentioned often.

What is Kidscape ?

Bullying has always been with us, but is on the rise, in new and even more virulent forms. The themes are consistent: racial, sexual, emotional, physical. Children can be bullied on the internet, with email, or through their phones, for instance. But most bullies rely on the old fashioned methods: taunting, violence, exclusion, rumours. And their impact is huge—almost half of the children who come to Kidscape report they have considered suicide—even eight-year-olds. Others truant, drop out of school, or simply give up, the more subtle emotional damage that can last for life.

The unique ZAP workshop was developed by Kidscape to bring together bullied children to learn new ways to turn off the bullying, as well as techniques for keeping a healthy attitude. For children who are desperate and isolated, it is a bit of a miracle. In most of the cases, the training works: follow up studies show almost 70% of the children are able to stop the bullying. Kidscape studies show this is a lasting change for most children.
